i.Premise
Engagements with Consequence & Co. take one of two shapes, pre-decision counsel or post-consequence remediation, and both share the same operating principles.
ii.Independence
Independent.
We are not a vendor, an implementation partner, a reseller, or a managed service. We have no software to sell, no platform to push, no commission on the choices our clients make. The independence is structural, not aspirational.
iii.Standing
Principal.
Engagements are led by principals with operational experience running technology functions, not by junior consultants supervised at a distance. The person in the room is the person responsible for the advice.
iv.Delivery
Two-track delivery: the & and the Co.
The & is the advisory partnership: principal counsel at the table, whether the table is a board, an executive forum, or a technical leadership meeting. The Co is the network of trusted operators we bring in when the engagement calls for hands rather than advice (architects, engineers, security specialists, ML practitioners). Engaged when needed, scoped separately, never the default.
When the evidence supports proceeding, the Co’s work is the technical heavy lifting: engineering practices, guardrails, policies, controlled (re)implementation, and ways of working proportionate to the actual use case and its consequences.
You cannot give credible advice on AI architecture maintainability without ever reading agent-generated code. You cannot give credible advice on token cost trajectories without ever modelling them. You cannot speak honestly to a board about technical risk if you’ve outsourced every encounter with the technical material to someone else. The Co exists so we don’t have to.
v.Clarity
Plainly communicated.
Findings, risks, and recommendations are written in language a board director, a CFO, and a senior engineer can each act on without translation. Technical depth is not a substitute for clarity.
vi.Accountability
Accountable.
We tell clients what we see, including when it isn’t what the room expected to hear. We will tell you what we think, and we will stand behind it.
vii.Pricing
How engagements are priced.
Pre-decision engagements are scoped at the brief stage, with the fee disclosed and agreed before the work begins. Remediation engagements are scoped to the situation, typically beginning with a focused assessment, followed by a defined remediation plan with sequenced phases, each scoped and priced individually. Hands-on work from the Co is scoped per piece. We don’t bill by the hour for advisory work, we don’t bill by deliverable, and we don’t structure incentives that reward us for prolonging engagements past their useful life.
